About the Author

Alethea Morrison is the author of Homegrown Honey Bees. She lived in San Francisco with her husband, photographer Mars Vilaubi, before stepping into the wild yonder of rural Massachusetts together to raise their son, keep bees and chickens, brew beer, sew clothes, grow heirloom beans, and otherwise slow down to smell the flowers of a handmade life. Their experience raising chickens was chronicled in Chick Days. Morrison works as the Creative Director at Storey Publishing and serves as president of the Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association.

Photographer Mars Vilaubi chronicled the adventures of his three backyard hens from their first days out of the egg through their first days laying eggs in Chick Days. He lives in western Massachusetts.

Best Beekeeping Book for Beginners

This is the book I wish existed when I started beekeeping in 2008. Loaded with photos and step-by-step instructions, it's one of the few books that will help you survive your first year, especially if you don't have a mentor. As the co-chair of the Albuquerque beekeepers group (400 strong) for the past 3 years, here's why I think beginner beeks will be especially well-supported by the approach in this book.

PROS:

- STEP-BY-STEP instructions are included for a variety of beginner tasks like installing a package, lighting a smoker, and conducting your first hive check. Seasoned beekeepers often forget how scary these first steps can be.

- PHOTOS, PHOTOS, PHOTOS! Everything from eggs and larvae to wax festooning to varroa mites to Nasonov fanning gets a gorgeous photo. I can't emphasize enough the importance of visual learning when it comes to beekeeping.

- A PERSONAL STORYLINE. This book follows the author's experience keeping backyard bees with her family. The good the bad and the ugly details are all included, making for a very forgiving and human narrative.

- INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL BEEKS. Backyard beekeepers from San Francisco to Austin to Chicago are highlighted throughout the book. (I'm on page 47.) The sheer variety of beekeepers presented makes a new beek feel comfortable developing their own unique approach.

- A NATURAL APPROACH. Most books I used in my first year were very chemical-centric and solely devoted to Langstroth hives. This book primarily covers Langstroth hives but also discusses top bar hives and pays more than just lip-service to a chemical-free approach.

THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!!!!!!!!!

Let me pre-face my review by saying I don't normally write reviews, but, here goes.
I had to on this one, because, this book has been wonderfully enjoyed by me and my two kids for many reasons.
It is a wonderfully written, informative how to book that takes you through something as daunting to myself as bee-keeping and it has opened up a whole new world of fun possibilities for me and my two kids! Seriously!
I bought the book on a whim, for many reasons, one, I like collecting books on crafting, do-it-your self projects, you name it, and.... I always have this goal of farm to table adventures, and bee-keeping is for me the top.... a secret wish that I never thought I'd actually be able to do.
Then arrives this book!
Firstly, it is really well-written. Not one of those how to books you just thumb through and mark pages...it has great stories about people doing small hives and showing you how you can too! I love that, it is very personal, and you instantly feel part of a fun community. It is easy to understand, and keeps you engaged with facts and everything you need to know-isms without being pretentious, dull, or repetitive. My daughter did a science project on honey bees and how important they are to our eco-system, and she was excited that that information was in there, too, a long with so much more we didn't know. We read the whole book together in just a couple of days, and have started our own plan! We are REALLY EXCITED!!
There are a lot of really great photos, and the photos are just beautiful, it is such a picturesque book, and I can't say enough of how the book is just really, really cute, and pretty, I love all the artwork and the layout of the pages, and the way the sections and chapters are organized, it is wonderful to remember it all, it flows really nicely.... It was really fun reading with my kids, and we are excited about starting our own hive this spring, it's really fun to think of all that is possible and involved with bee-keeping, who knew? You have to get this book and find out!!! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in something to read about with their kids, or who loves crafts, hobbys, gardening, and, of course bees!
I will definitely be looking for more books from this author!

About the Author
There is still very little known about the life of Vivian Maier. What is known is that she was born in New York in 1926 and worked as a nanny for a family on Chicago’s North Shore during the 50s and 60s. Seemingly without a family of her own, the children she cared for eventually acted as caregivers for Maier herself in the autumn of her life. She took hundreds of thousands of photographs in her lifetime, but never shared them with anyone. Maier lost possession of her art when her storage locker was sold off for non-payment. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 83.

John Maloof is an author and street photographer involved in historic preservation of Chicago’s Northwest Side. He discovered the first negatives of Vivian Maier’s work in 2007 while compiling a book about the history of the neighborhood where he grew up.

Geoff Dyer’s books include But Beautiful (Picador, 2009), Yoga For People Who Can’t Be Bothered To Do It (Vintage, 2004), The Ongoing Moment (Vintage, 2007) winner of the ICP Infinity Award for writing on photography, the novels Paris Trance (Picador, 2010) and Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi (Vintage, 2010), and a collection of essays, Otherwise Known as the Human Condition (Graywolf Press, 2011).

Great photographs - cheap reproduction.

I absolutely love Vivian Maier's photographs. Unfortunately the book is printed very poorly by Asia Pacific Offset in China chosen by powerHouse Book. The halftoning pattern interacts with the original grain of the print or negative to create an ugly effect. The sepia toning is overdone and nauseating. But the biggest problem has to do with the depth of blacks and shadows. I measured the deepest black in most images at a density of 1.6, which isn't really black, more like coffee with cream. What a pitty.

EDIT: increased rating in light of the discussion associated with this review and to take into account the price of the book. The quality is ok for a $26 book but is obviously not the quality found in a $100 book.

Great book full of everyday pictures from a long time ago

I was interested in this book when I read the announcement and for the price I couldn't leave it. Today it arrived and tonight I finally had the time to have a good look at the pictures.

Vivian's story is explained elsewhere, so I won't repeat it. I'll just give my impressions of the book.

All pictures appear to be taken with the Rolleiflex, giving square pictures. All pictures have the same size and similar toning, which gives a great consistency throughout the book. The pictures themselves show everyday scenes from a long time ago, from all parts of society. You'll find old people, young kids, homeless people, rich folk, men and women and many different scenes. From the pictures I gather that her style was very unobtrusive, just letting the stories unravel in front of her eyes (and lens) and firing the shutter at the right time. There are quite a few pictures where you see people looking at the camera, but many more where she seems to be a passive observer.

What I love about this book is that the images come across as totally unpretentious, void of the "artsy" side some photographers appear to want to develop. Wonderful, if there's a second book coming out, I can't wait to pre-order it.

The paper and print quality is pretty decent for the price, although some pictures had tiny dots where they shouldn't be. Probably due to the price constraint. It's printed in China, which pushes the price down too I guess. Nothing bad, again, the prints are still very nice and I have more expensive books in my collection that are worse in terms of quality. Don't let this hold you back in buying the book. Amazon has a great return policy anyway.

Expected better prints

I've loved Vivan's work since the day I saw it in The British Photography Journal. I was excited about this book for months. I really had expected it to be amazing like what I have seen on the website. The blank pages are fine by me it is similar to Robert Frank's The Americans which also had blank pages in the 1st edition but later were taken out. They give the book room to breath. The reason why I am giving this book a review of a 3 is because the prints are very hard for me to look at. They are not printed in a true black and white they have this disgusting sepia tone to them it is slight enough that it bothers my eyes a terrible amount. I do not feel that these pictures have to have this tacky nostalgia look to them. I hope that someone important reads this and prints a copy in true black and white, or by some chance im the only one who got a sepia book. I ordered a second one for my mother so I hope that It will be truely black and white.

The hottest, comprehensive book on Spanish slang ever!

Of all the books I have read on Spanish slang and idioms, this is by far the best I have ever seen. It's quite comprehensive and well documented by country and region, easily accessible by Spanish to English, English to Spanish entries. One of the great pluses of this edition is that native readers from several Spanish-speaking countries contributed in developing the final manuscript. Thus, regional variations are clearly delineated, which makes this book so highly valuable. You can easily dispense with the authors's previously published book, especially the popular Street Spanish series, and make this your "bible" on Spanish slang. First rate! Indispensable!

This is James from James Spanish (the learning Spanish blog). Learning Spanish from academic courses is great, but if you want to travel, work or live in a Spanish speaking country you will need a bit of help to avoid looking stupid from time to time. Every language has its own slang expressions that can catch out even the most fluent of Spanish students. This great book covers a huge range of phrases, expressions, and idioms to help you understand Spanish slang.

The book introduces common colloquial or slang terms from many different Spanish speaking countries around the world, highlighting different expressions used in different regions to give you a strong understanding of the local language. What is harmless in one country may be considered shocking in another, so be sure to pay attention to the geography of each expression before you travel.

The book isn't afraid to show you some of the more rude or vulgar slang. This will not only help you to identify when someone is being offensive, but can also help you to avoid an accidental slip of the tongue. (Some words are dangerously similar and changing a single letter can change the whole meaning.)

Spanish is an extremely expressive language, and some might argue that it has many more slang expressions than English. Certainly the expressions are much stranger, with origins so well hidden that they seem obscure. This book sheds some light on seemingly bizarre phrases, and also gives you a more interesting vocabulary to use in conversations.

In closing my review of this product, I'd like to share with you the three Amazon products that I have found most helpful in my pursuit to learn Spanish. If you are truly serious about achieving fluency, I'd recommend getting all 3 of them if you can afford it.

1. Lights, Camera, Spanish (Book + DVD): Learn Conversational Spanish by Watching a Romantic Adventure This is actually a 90 minute movie for Spanish-language learners. It gives the option to watch the movie with subtitles but I'd recommend not using them to improve your Spanish. This "movie" also includes a workbook so that you can reinforce the Spanish vocabulary words and phrases from the film. The workbook also has lots of exercises to keep you engaged in the film. But be prepared to hear Chilean accents. Although pleasent to the ear, the accents from Chile are very different from most Latin American accents.

2. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This software replaces the traditional verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an interactive and fun activity. This should be a required resource for anyone who wants to improve their ability to conjugate Spanish verbs. Especially anyone who is challenged by the drudgery of learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs and who is looking for a new way to make learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an easy and fun activity

3. Diccionario esencial de la lengua espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition) If you are really serious about speaking the language fluently, then at some point you will need to replace your Spanish-English dictionary and get a pure Spanish dictionary with both the vocabulary words and the definitions entirely in Spanish. I use this one only because it was highly-recommended by a friend from Spain who teaches Spanish.

I was expecting more out of this book considering the price.. I have purchased many learning books on Solidworks and there are other books out just as good for a cheaper price.

Really good basic book

I did not have any 3D design experience before taking a class in SolidWorks and buying this book. Our class is using 2013 version, but I bought this older version and haven't had any issues beside some obvious dimensioning typos. The book is very clear and well laid out. My instructor is very good and has a lot of experience in design, but doesn't deviate from the tutorials much because they are very nicely written. She did point out a couple of items that the book does not emphasize that if neglected could affect the design.

Inspiring page turner

Tukmakov describes in a very entertaining prose different ways of unsettling the opponent, by playing outrageous moves. The reader is offered a diagram ( there could be more, the positions are very tactical and more diagrams would come in handy) and most often, he will find difficult to chose the "bluffing move". Surprisingly difficult, also, is to find the right move in defense - after Tal, Larsen, Morozevitch or Jobava has tried a dubious sacrifice, for example. The author insists on the psychological aspect of the game, tells many stories and try to interpretate the thought of both players, with open subjectivity and humour. Most of the -many- games are well known, but we rediscover them with great pleasure and fun. The reader will certainly risk some bluff in his next games !

Another Classic: A different kind of Book! Must read!!!

A very interesting Book!
I play chess as an hobby. I have an FM title and Correspondence chess GM title.
1) This book is very interesting, and is very entertaining. Fun to read!
2) it is not a classical book, showing you how to play in a classical position.
It shows risky moves (sometimes just crazy!). moves that would open your eyes, and ask yourself if it is really sound.
3) level 1600-2800 fide, wide range. (under 1600, games are won by tactics) This book is also about tactics, but in a not clear way, result not known, circumstances sharp, players on the edge)
4) Sometimes, great masters take risks (not all sound or correct), but how much is sound and how much is calculates risk? What is the boundary between the truth and imagination?
5) ie: Tal, Shirov (even kramnik and carlsen !!!), taking decisions that are at the edge. maybe sound, but...... Not like Fischer games or kasparov's games, which were almost correct and they could escape with a draw... These are decisions that are almost bluff, almost incorrect.. but almost......
6) he also shows how this can ne risky (Mameyerov's game) and sometimes may backfire...
7) Some games from morozvich and larsen would also fit perfectly in this book.
8) So, at times when you feel like you want to get a little crazy and get out of ordinary and have the corage of that risky move, which may not be completely sound, but you really want to play...... It is these positions that he analyzes...The truth: in between, sound or not...Decisive games in which normal positions don't apply.. Something to learn for every one.
9) SUMMARY: Very easy and fun reading and also very educational...A very interesting book. Entertaining... Not a routine book...But also teaching (time trouble risky moves that win , with examples etc) The boundary between sound and unsound (fantasy) ? sound vs unsound......
I would recommend this book for beginner to GM level. it gives clear examples of how sometimes it is OK to "get crazy" or "original" depending how the result turns out! Human weaknesses and strengths.. You have to apply it to yourself.. Everyone would get something different form this book.

Very interesting but with one error.

The book is very interesting but there is a flaw: the end of it the index of games is wrong! Beggining on the 3rd chapter the number of the page of a certain game is completely wrong. For instance it says page 84 when it is really page 83. The typos continue till the end where there is a Carlsen game that it would be on page 225 when the book has just 225 pages!! I think the editors should be more carefull about such errors.It doesn't really affect the content of the book but makes it hard to find a game.

I am unable to objectively review Jim Herman's Voyage of 1766, as my maiden name is Herman, and Jimmy is a cousin of mine. That being said, I found the book quite good and very educational. I learned more about my direct ancestors from its pages than I ever knew talking to family members in all my life. The story is a fascinating look at our past through one family's eyes, and is guaranteed to awaken the urge in anyone to learn more about their past. Just to note: You don't have to be in this family to enjoy this book. It's a great read for anyone.

One of the better planning books

Granted, it's a required textbook, but it has more information than many of the others I've read (close to 100 now). It may be pricey, but if you're a student it will be well worth it. If you're a professional, this book should already be on your bookshelf.
