I think this books is an excellent starter for beginners and intermediates of composition. It contains key point and many brief, but great, example to expand visually on the ideas it is portraying. It is a book of ideas, so it does not sway the reader to pick certain styles, but rather shows the reader what they can do with their music. Have a good one.

This is a well organized and well written book for both the student and the professional composer. The many examples and the direct, thoughtful writing are not only, to say the least, helpful... but also refreshing. As anyone who has read through various tomes on this subject knows, the majority of them are opaque; this is not because of how advanced the subject is but because the writing is so poor.
Well, don't worry. This book will make you happy!

I bought this book to review the techniques of composition in the 1900s. It gives ample to space to each development, along with many examples for each.
Another great book to check out isRobert Morgan's "Twentieth Century Music".
