By 2008, however, their public services and cash economy had deteriorated, and Gebusi relied increasingly, once again, on indigenous customs and practices. Some aspects of change, however, remained enduring. More recently, problems of economic hardship have persisted―as has the resilience of Gebusi culture. About the Author
Bruce Knauft is Samuel C. Dobbs Professor of Anthropology and Executive Director of the Institute of Critical International Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. He has taught a broad range of students, including many who have gone on to conduct anthropological fieldwork in diverse world areas. Author of seven books and numerous journal articles and chapters, Professor Knauft has written extensively on topics and issues in cultural anthropology. He has been interested in the Gebusi people of Papua New Guinea since his first fieldwork among them in 1980–82.

Good non-fiction book

I had to read this for a class, and it wasn't like other book I had to read for other classes. It was a good, real-life story about a native tribe in Papua New Guinea. Would suggest it for an anthropology class or just a light read.

An absolutely fantastic read!

I had to read this book for my cultural anthropology class, and I am very glad that I actually did. Knauft expertly describes and portrays the various people of the Gebusi culture in such a way that you feel you know them as well as he did. This book is an excellent look at a different and fascinating culture. I highly recommend this book to anybody who enjoys learning about other people.
