The Best Book Ever Written

This book plainly states the path to rejuvenation of African people...return to the way, our way...meaning return to African culture which gives African people strength...the strength that allowed us to create kingdoms and full fledged civilizations, intellectual centers before Europe existed. The first page brought tears to my eyes. I read this book every day as if I was married to it. It will resurrect you with its imagery and rejuvenate your spirit...and simply reconnect you with your African self. It is poetry, it is music...it is drums beating inside your soul. Read this book, and buy it for all of your friends.

Two Thousand Seasons is a very touching book which should be used in schools here to help the children who descended from Africans of all backgrounds to learn about the way of life and culture and traditions of Africa before the influence of foreign values and colonialism. One of my favorite thrillers of the year

I'm in publishing, so I get the chance to read quite a few thrillers before they're released, and NO TIME FOR GOODBYE made my top-10 list of the year. The premise is stunning: a teenage girl wakes up to find her family gone. Her father, mother, and brother have simply vanished, leaving her to deal with the painful aftermath of abandonment. Or are they dead? She never finds out... until years later, when she's happily married, with a child of her own. Suddenly new clues arise that make her wonder if her parents and brother may still be alive. But then, why did they leave her?

It's her husband who narrates the tale, and as the story twists and turns, even he wonders about the sanity of his own wife. The ending is a stunning surprise. Deeply satisfying, emotionally wrenching, this is one terrific book.

Not just a thriller

No Time for Goodbye is marketed as a can't-put-it-down suspense thriller, and while the description is appropriate, the book is much more than that. Like Linwood Barclay's novels featuring Zack Walker, No Time for Goodbye is more character- than plot-driven. Yes, there is a clever, intricately-woven plot, but what distinguises this novel from the typical thriller is that the characters seem like real people, not just convenient plot devices. Barclay has the ability to draw us into the lives of his characters, so we come to genuinely care for them, and don't want anything bad to happen to them. And, most unusual for a novel in the suspense genre, there are some truly touching passages, at least two of which brought tears to my eyes. This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill suspense thriller.

I found Cynthia's character to be annoying and overbearing

This book started off well. A girl (Cynthia) wakes up to find that her whole family is missing. In fact, they have disappeared. As she had gotten drunk (underage) with her boyfriend the previous night, she thinks that maybe her family is just angry at her. She continues with her daily routine until it is confirmed that her family is missing, at which point she goes and lives with an aunt.

Flash forward, she is married with a daughter of her own. She appears on one of those 'Unsolved Mystery" shows. After the show airs, she becomes paranoid - thinking that she is being watched and that someone may have broken into her house. One of the downfalls of her paranoia is the way she hovers over her younger daughter, who craves some independence.

Eventually, the family hires a PI. This is when things begin to go wrong. The PI goes missing, presumably dead. The aunt that raised her is killed. After receiving some questionable clues, she decides to investigate on her own.

I personally found the ending to be predictable. Without revealing too much, I quickly figured out what had most likely happened to Cynthia's family very early on in the book. Additionally, I found Cynthia's character to be annoying and overbearing. I can cut her some slack because of her traumatic childhood, but she seemed to be unable to appreciate the family she had now because she was so busy dwelling on the family she lost in the past. Considering we met Cynthia as a child and saw her grow into an adult with a pre-teen child, I felt as if she never truly grew up past her own childhood. I felt that the ending - where she finds out what happened to her family - was predictable. Maybe not the exact details, but the premise of what happened to her family.

Amazing trilogy

shortly before I downloaded the trilogy as an ebook, I had picked up the first story "Valis" at my local book shop. The whole trilogy as an ebook was actually cheaper than the single book in print, so I snagged it right away. I usually know if I love a book before I even open it, and the best way to judge that is by seeing that it was written by Philip K Dick. ;) being a huge fan of his writing, I don't even have to read the description to know that's it's gonna be well written and beautifully deep. The first book in the series was like none of the other novels I've ever read by him. It was strongly based on religion, and actually ties into his exegesis very well. I wouldn't recommend this as your very first Philip K Dick book, considering it's a little slow moving and very deeply riddled with philosophy. But if you're looking for a book that really paints a picture of Dick 's mind and a lot of his views, this trilogy is amazing. Also, don't get discouraged if the first book is a little dry for you. The next two are way easier to follow, yet just as deep in ways. This is definitely a series of books I'm gonna have to read again and again, loved it, but I still don't have a huge grasp on the messages. Gotta love Philip K Dick.

The lmost ambitious, erudite and humanely compassionate book I've read since Moby Dick

I have loved books as much as this only a few times in my life: Moby Dick. Winters Tale. Infinite Jest. Mao II. What they have in common is that they are epic explorations of big ideas that are rooted in a study of unique individuals. These books are a record of one man grappling with what it means to live, and one day die, in a transcendent universe. Plus aliens, the devil, gnosticism, dante, wallenstein, Marin in the sixties, Wagner and on and on and on.

This isn't science fiction (especially the last book) and I say that without denigration. This isn't literature either. This is high-stakes theological world building on a scaffold of metaphor. Read it boldly and humbly and let it change you.

An engrossing read, and great value

The three volumes included here comprise a fascinating picture of PKD's later work. Not enough can be said about this man, as a product of the late 20th century. His intellect, command of history and philosophy, and pure free-spirited creativity about the universe are on full display through VALIS and The Divine Invasion; which mix sci-fi, metafiction, postmodernism, magic realism, religious mysticism, humor, among many other ingredients. The Transmigration of Timothy Archer is another great PKD narrative which winks at the cosmic powers at work in the prior two. For the Kindle, this is a great buy and an engrossing adventure for the modern literature fan.

And even as an avid reader, my vocabulary got a workout; as did the Kindle Dictionary!
