ARM Assembly Language: Fundamentals and Techniques, by William Hohl

Written by the director of ARM’s worldwide academic program, this volume gives computer science professionals and students an edge, regardless of their preferred coding language. For those with some basic background in digital logic and high-level programming, the book examines code relevant to hardware and peripherals found on today's microcontrollers and looks at situations all programmers will eventually encounter.

The book’s carefully chosen examples teach easily transferrable skills that will help readers optimize routines and significantly streamline coding, especially in the embedded space.

This book is easily adaptable for classroom use. Instructors can access features that include a solutions manual, assembly language basics, problems, and actual code. The book also provides access to a fully functional evaluation version of the RealView Microcontroller Development Kit from Keil.

While it is still an important skill, getting good instruction in assembly language is not easy. The availability of languages such as C and Java foster the belief that engineers and programmers need only address problems at the highest levels of a program's operation. Yet, even modern coding methods, when done well, require an understanding of basic assembly methods such as those gained by learning ARM. Certain features that are the product of today’s hardware, such as coprocessors or saturated math operations, can be accessed only through the hardware’s native instructions. For that matter, any programmer wishing to achieve results as exact as his or her intentions needs to possess a mastery of machine code basics as taught in the pages of this book.

Of the 13 billion microprocessor-based chips shipped in the last year, nearly 3 billion were ARM-based, making operational knowledge of ARM an essential component of any programmer’s tool kit. That it can be applied with most any language makes it invaluable.

Introduction to assembly language and embedded systems
By Steve E. Chapel
The purpose of this book is to introduce assembly language to college undergraduates who have had some programming experience. As a result, the book should be easy to follow for anyone already knows a programming language. The book explains the use of ARM's Keil Microcontroller Development Kit, which includes an editor, assembler, and debugger. A "lite" version that is limited to 32KB of code (more than enough for learning assembly language) is available for free. It's a Windows executable, but I have been running it on Linux using WINE with no problems. This means that you do not need an ARM processor to run your ARM programs, and the debugger lets you set breakpoints, single step through code, and observe all the registers and memory as your program executes.

Some of the explanations are not as clear as they could be, such as the initial explanation of condition codes. The book also covers only the ARMv4T instruction set and THUMB instruction set used in ARM7TDMI and later processors, not the newer instructions or new Unified Assembly Language. This coverage is appropriate for programmers new to ARM, because most code uses the older instructions and much existing code uses the old version of the assembly language.

I'd recommend the ARM architecture to anyone who wants to learn an assembly language because the instruction set is relatively simple compared to other popular architectures (namely Intel x86 and x86-64) and is easy to learn. ARM is a very popular architecture for the quickly growing embedded systems market, and it also contains features that are common in newer processors such as conditional execution of instructions to avoid branches. The book has an emphasis on programming for embedded systems, so it includes examples involving digital signal processing, data communications, and interfacing with peripherals.

Assembling ARMs
By Brian DeLacey
The book begins with a short but informative intro to RISC and ARM. This opening sets the stage for where ARM fits in the industry and why its importance has grown. By the time you're done with the first 25 pages, you'll also know tech concepts well enough to understand low-level computing systems and how bits become software.

The second chapter provides an introduction to ARM's programming model. Chapter 3 gets you up and running with simple programs. The book refers to a freely available IDE you can use to run programs. The author writes, "Learning assembly requires an adventurous programmer" and your first adventure may be looking for more details on the IDE (in Appendix B.)

After installing the IDE, you'll soon be stepping through your first simple assembly language programs on your own. Run sample programs while reading to keep things interesting.

If you press on beyond the simpler examples, Chapter 4 provides Assembler Directives you'll need for more complicated programs. Chapters 5 thru 11 cover essential, common ingredients in program design - addressing, arithmetic, looping. branching, tables, subroutines, stacks, exceptions etc. If you've previously worked with a higher level language like C, you'll see how ARM's assembly code relates. In a number of descriptive examples, C code snippets are translated directly into Assembly Language.

Chapter 12 was my favorite - rolling the prior chapter lessons into an embedded system design with UART, D/A converter, memory map and more. The book's final two chapters cover THUMB, a 16-bit subset of ARM's instruction set, and guidance for mixing C with Assembly.

This book mixes great technical content with a hands-on opportunity to work in ARM code. The author's experience at ARM helps make this an authoritative text - bringing together his dozen years of engineering work and his role in ARM's academic program. The end result is a book that serves as a great tool for learning the essentials of how ARM works.

Great content on ARM in a very readable text
By cs06
Although the book wasn't out yet, ARM was kind enough to forward me an excerpt and table of contents from the book. This guy is obviously NOT an academic but an engineer. It's easy to read and the book isn't filled with Greek letters just to make it sound scholarly. I like the fact that you get some tools to use with the book, that is very useful. I wish he talked more about how to mix C and assembly together, and there are a couple of examples that could use more explanation, but otherwise, so far I like the style of the writing. The chapter on arithmetic is by far the best explanation I've seen yet on how to play with integer and fractional math. I've never seen that explained anywhere before. And it's not a bad reference, since you get part of the Architectural Reference Manual in the back. As far as textbooks go, this one is very readable, and would definitely help anyone doing ARM related coursework.

Just What I Needed
By Stan57
Logically laid out, beginning with the necessities first. This is much more pleasant to read than the manual which came with the camera. Quite a bit of color photographic images are contained in the book. Written in conversational style. Also serves as a good reference manual. This is what I was looking for.

Diagnosis of a malaise and a prescription for healing
By Peter Uys
In this perceptive work, Ayaan Hirsi Ali examines a major issue of our times with admirable fluency and erudition. In the preface she points out the similarities in attitude towards Islamic culture now by the Western adherents of multiculturalism and towards communist regimes by leftists then. Besides an abiding hatred for the West in some circles, it is because of the victim culture and moral relativism that oppressive practices are ignored. Muslims are perceived to be victims of the West. For the same reason, Israel is fiercely condemned while the Palestinians get a free pass. She considers this patronizing and exemplary of racism in its purest form; the idea of the "other" that can do no wrong and must be shielded from criticism. Ibn Warraq exposes all aspects of this harmful fallacy in his classic study Defending the West.

Hirsi Ali asks the advocates of the multicultural society to acquaint themselves with the suffering of women who are treated as chattels. The notion of "group rights" are detrimental to Muslim women, and without emancipation, the socially disadvantageous position of Muslims will persist. She laments the fact that Muslim women are not listened to and calls for self-examination in intellectual discourse. Hirsi Ali also deals with the clash of cultures in Europe as revealed by amongst others Bruce Bawer in While Europe Slept, and examines the triangles of power in the Muslim world itself: the triangle of the strong leader, the clergy and the army, and the triangle of apathy, fundamentalism and refugees/emigration. On this subject, I also recommend Now They Call Me Infidel by Nonie Darwish.

The author provides a brief history of her early childhood in Somalia and her personal emancipation after emigrating to the Netherlands, explaining why she had to leave Holland for the USA. This is engagingly related in her brilliant work Infidel. There is an interview with prominent Canadian Muslim reformer Irshad Manji, a chapter on female genital mutilation and 10 tips for Muslim women who wish to escape their oppressive circumstances. A full transcript of the documentary film Submission is included, the film that led to the death of Theo van Gogh. Hirsi Ali claims that instead of empowering Muslim students through research and training, European universities have become activist centers to further Arab political aims.

She considers Muslims in Europe and around the world to comprise three broad categories: terrorists and the radicals that assist them, the tiny group of reformers that embraces the open society and the large number of undecideds who are caught in a mental vise, the painful contradiction between the harsh tenets of an intolerant religion and the values of the open society. She believes that the first victims of Muhammad are the minds of Muslims themselves as they exist in a situation of cognitive dissonance. Western cultural relativists flinch from criticism of Muhammad for fear of offence, thereby making it more difficult for western Muslims to review their own moral values.

This thought-provoking work provides first-hand experience and knowledge of a particular worldview and serves as an appeal for clear thinking, empowerment and individual liberation. Hirsi Ali nails it when she shows how various evils result from beliefs based on fear. Her insights have universal application as of course they are valid for any religion or cult. Although not flawless, The Caged Virgin is a bright light of courage and reason in the darkness of oppression and brainwashing. The book concludes with bibliographic notes and an index. Because They Hate by Brigitte Gabriel provides further valuable information on the development and results of religious radicalism whilst in The Unlearned Lessons of the Twentieth Century, French philosopher Chantal Delsol explains the civilizational fatigue of contemporary Europe of which one effect is the existence of enclaves where medieval brutality goes unchallenged.

Essential for understanding the position of Muslim women in the west and the conflict of values for Muslim refugees
By tina
Everyone should read this book or the author's updated version. The author provides a highly readable explanation of the basic beliefs of Islam, its conflicts with western values, the struggles of Muslim refugees in the west (focusing on women), and distinguishes between the religious and the cultural/traditional position of Muslim women. Ayaan Hirsi Ali presents very articulate arguments about Muslim women issues and proposes reasonable responses in western society. She also points out the unintentional effects of political correctness and religious tolerance on the rights of Muslim women in the west.

Is There Hope for Muslim Women?

It's hard to comprehend the mindset Islamic men have toward women. Will moderate Muslims ever step forward and voice

This book tries to capture the major topics that fall under the umbrella of "Variation Management." The book is laid out so that the reader can easily understand the variation management process and how each chapter maps to this process. This book has two purposes. It is a "one-step" resource for people who want to know everything about dimensional management and variation management. It is a useful reference for specific target audiences within the variation management process. This book includes many new techniques, methodologies, and examples that have never been published before. Much of the new material revolves around Six Sigma techniques that have evolved within the past 5 years. This book offers high level information and expertise to a broad spectrum of readers, while providing detailed information for those needing specific information. The contributors are practitioners who have hands-on experience. Much of the expertise in this book is a result of identifying needs to solve problems in our companies and businesses. Many of the chapters are the documented solutions to these needs.

Outstanding Desktop Reference
By Heisman Nudge
I looked long and hard for a book this thorough. A buddy of mine had Crevelings tolerancing book and I thought that was excellent. As I finished my masters degree, I needed a thorough desktop reference that I thought represented best in class. That's exactly what this book is. Since each chapter is written by the major players in these areas, this book is much more than one authors views on the topics. Rather, it is a best in class compilation from some of the sharper folks here in the US doing dimensioning and tolerancing. Paul's chapters themselves are excellent and very thorough. His discussion on how to incorporate the geometric controls into stackup analyses is excellent. Overall, this book should be on every mechanical engineers desktop along with the ASME GD&T standard and Montgomery's books on Quality Control and Design of Experiments. Hats off to Paul and all the other authors for their excellent work!

Dimensioning and Tolerancing Handbook
By A Customer
This book includes an extraordinary consolidation of cutting edge information and innovative authors that are truly on the "bleeding edge of technology"! Each chapter covers different topic areas by individuals practicing these design techniques and tools in the real world today. The chapters cover everything from an overview of the various quality thursts, to tolerance allocation techniques, to maximizing GD&T, to Statistical tolerancing, to developing process capability models for DFSS (Designing for Six Sigma), and much more. This text is surely one of the best ever compiled as a consolidation of the contained related subject matter. This is a priceless body of knowledge in a single book!

Excellent Reference book
By MagnetMagnate
This book is a MUST HAVE for any serious engineer/designer. I bought this book two years after I graduated to introduce me to tolerance stack up. I have however found a use for every piece of information in this book. It is also refreshing to see that each chapter/section has been written by experts in each of their disciplines so you know that you are getting the best of the best in both knowledge and explanation. Amazing book.

Tensor Geometry: The Geometric Viewpoint and its Uses (Graduate Texts in Mathematics), by Christopher T. J. Dodson, Timothy Poston

This treatment of differential geometry and the mathematics required for general relativity makes the subject accessible, for the first time, to anyone familiar with elementary calculus in one variable and with some knowledge of vector algebra. The emphasis throughout is on the geometry of the mathematics, which is greatly enhanced by the many illustrations presenting figures of three and more dimensions as closely as the book form will allow.

Excellent Introduction to Semi-Riemannian Geometry
By A Reader
The authors of this excellent text include a memorable passage in the Introduction that perfectly captures the purpose and primary strength of the book:

"The title of this book is misleading. Any possible title would mislead somebody. 'Tensor Analysis' suggests to a mathematician an ungeometric, manipulative debauch of indices, with tensors ill-defined as 'quantities that transform according to' unspeakable formulae. 'Differential Geometry' would leave many a physicist unaware that the book is about matters with which he is very much concerned. We hope that 'Tensor Geometry' will at least lure both groups to look more closely."

Dodson and Poston's text is a welcome entry in that all-too-small class of books that attempt to bridge the conceptual gulf that separates mathematicians from physicists when they write about differential geometry and general relativity. Modern mathematical treatments of both Riemannian and Lorentzian geometry are typically written primarily in concise and conceptually rich coordinate-free notation; physicists, in sharp contrast, tend to write almost exclusively in a notation that stresses the use of local coordinate systems and index manipulation. A person who is educated in one of these traditions must apply himself with diligence to become proficient in the other; however, this "bilingual" proficiency is surely necessary for the serious students of general relativity, who must study literature written in both styles.

Dodson and Poston's book provides an accessible introduction to the mathematics of general relativity, and it should be particularly useful to both mathematicians and physicists as they develop their abilities to read and write in both coordinate-free and index-based notations. The book is written at a level that should make it accessible to anyone who has studied multi-variable calculus and linear algebra. It is not a complete introduction to either modern differential geometry or general relativity, nor do the authors claim that it is. After all, Spivak devoted five volumes to Riemannian geometry alone and still failed to provide an exhaustive introduction; the subject is enormous in scope.

Mathematicians who find this book helpful in their studies of general relativity might consider looking into the following books, each of which is written in the same mathematical style: (1) Gravitational Curvature by Theodore Frankel (offers a beautiful derivation of the Raychaudhuri Equation); (2) Manifolds, Tensor Analysis and Applications by Abraham, Marsden and Ratiu (Chapters 6, 7 and 8 offer an exceptionally lucid introduction to differential forms, integration on manifolds, the Hodge star operator, the codifferential, and applications of these materials to physics); (3) The Geometry of Kerr Black Holes by Barrett O'Neill (if you want to UNDERSTAND the use of the Weyl curvature tensor in defining the Petrov Type of a spacetime, then read Chapter 5 of this wonderful book); (4) Semi-Riemannian Geometry with Applications to Relativity by Barrett O'Neill (makes an excellent companion text to Dodson and Poston as a mathematically rigorous introduction to GR); (5) General Relativity for Mathematicians by Rainer Sachs and Hung-Hsi Wu (a masterpiece, difficult to find today but worth the effort). For a more far-ranging treatment of geometry with applications beyond GR, Theodore Frankel's The Geometry of Physics is also highly recommended.

After one has used Dodson and Poston and some of these other references as a sort of "Rosetta Stone," then one can become reasonably proficient in deciphering both coordinate-free and coordinate-based literature and translating one into the other. It is sad that the educational process is necessarily so inefficient, but we must be grateful for books like Dodson and Poston's that help us in the endeavor.

Excellent, But Has Flawed Editing
By A Customer
I found this book much more comprehensible than the Bishop & Goldberg text (perhaps because the specifics of my particular graduate program made this approach more accessible). The only problem is that in some important areas of the text there are typographical errors; this text needs a new corrected edition--otherwise I have no complaints. The only recommendation I would make to a prospective reader is to obtain a copy of the excellent, old, out-of-print (but still readily avilable used, on the web) Vector and Tensor Analysis by Louis Brand and master the tensor chapter in it. This will prepare the reader to gain an idea of where the authors are heading with their modern, abstract functional analysis approach.
The reader will be greatly assisted by a solid understanding of linear algebra and a preparatory course in functional analysis wouldn't hurt, either. This material is challenging even for a math graduate student; any high school student who could master this book would have to be gifted, indeed.

Good introduction
By assaftal@hotmail.com
I agree with previous reviewers, and only wish to add a few comments: 1. This book assumes very little on the part of the reader, which makes it ideal for beginners, as long as they're mature readers. 2. Like many books out there, everything in this book is real and finite dimensional, which is a bit disappointing. 3. It's not as advanced as the writers or reviewers would like to think. For instance, no differential forms, no killing vectors, and although there's a chapter on lie groups it treats only their geometrical aspects and not the algebraic ones. 4. However, it contains two (extensive) chapters on SR and GR which are pure gold, I say! Everything is done from the geometrical point of view, and only AFTER all of the math has been introduced, so the discussion is mature and elegant. In short, this is a good book to read for the geometrical intuition but don't count on it to explain everything about differential geometry. Enjoy!

Excerpt from the Prologue: “Nennius, the lowly minister and servant of the servants of God, by the grace of God, disciple of St. Elbotus,* to all the followers of truth sendeth health. * Or Elvod, bishop of Bangor, A.D. 755, who first adopted in the Cambrian church the new cycle for regulating Easter. Be it known to your charity, that being dull in intellect and rude of speech, I have presumed to deliver these things in the Latin tongue, not trusting to my own learning, which is little or none at all, but partly from traditions of our ancestors, partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans, and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymus, Prosper, Eusebius, and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons, although our enemies, not following my own inclinations, but, to the best of my ability, obeying the commands of my seniors; I have lispingly put together this history from various sources, and have endeavored, from shame, to deliver down to posterity the few remaining ears of corn about past transactions, that they might not be trodden under foot, seeing that an ample crop has been snatched away already by the hostile reapers of foreign nations.”

A Reprint of Part of a Very Old Collection of Translations
By A Customer
This small paper reprint comes from a very old collection of translations that contained Gildas, Geoffrey, and Nennius with I believe a section of the Anglo Saxon Chronical. The Translation is rather poor and is from a manuscript inferior to that used for Nennius, History of the British, 1980. This manuscript unlike that used for Myres' edition does not contain the Annales Cambriae. The reason this version is the only one in circulation might be the lack of copywrite protection. Be warned this translation by Giles is not annotated in any way and is in an order not congruent with that cited in most Arthurian secondary literature--following up footnotes will be difficult. If you can get the 1980 translation from a university library or a very good public library, you can annotate this text and correct the the most glaring translation errors.

cheap, disgraceful, and a terrible wasted opportunity
By F. P. Barbieri
When J.Giles translated a number of ancient British and English historical texts in 1844, he was, I suppose, breaking new ground - although not so new as might be thought, since many of his texts were widely and long since known. But that any publisher should see fit to reprint his dated and by now thoroughly inadequate translation, is hard to believe; and that it should be the mighty Penguin, the largest British publisher of classic texts in paperback, is beyond condemnation. It is not as though newer translations were not available. These texts are absolutely fundamental to the understanding of the history of Britain, and to place this in the hands of the ordinary paperback reader, with Penguin's supposed authority behind it, in place of a new version with the insights of 160 years of scholarship behind it, is to do them a grave disservice. I really cannot understand why Penguin has been struck with such a sudden fit of cheapskatehood; or should we think of offloading any shares we have in the company?

Key Document of Arthurian History
By P. Turner
Nennius has assembled and preserved some of the earliest accounts of British history in the dimly understood Fifth Century. Some of his sources consisted of earlier writings, and others oral traditions; many would otherwise be lost today. Every student of Dark Ages and early Medieval history should read this classic translation of Nennius's crucial work.

Organized Crime (6th Edition), by Michael D. Lyman

This student-friendly text illuminates organized crime from social, political, and economic perspectives, dispelling long-standing myths that prevent real understanding.

Organized Crime, 6e, is designed to be an introductory text serving several purposes in the field of criminal justice. First, it gives the reader an understanding of the concept of organized crime–what it is and what it is not–and the necessary historical foundation for understanding the evolution, development, and current status of organized crime. Most important, the book is designed to dispel the myth that organized crime is composed exclusively of Italian American criminal groups.

Another important component of the book is that drug trafficking plays an important role in the continuing proliferation of organized crime groups. The existence of the illegal drug trade says much about both the groups that traffic in illicit drugs and the members of society who use these drugs, consequently lending support to organized criminals.

Finally, terrorism has dominated public policy since September 11, 2001. With increasing global awareness of terrorist organizations and those who belong to them, traditional models of terrorism have been challenged because the structure, financing, and recruiting mechanisms of such organizations are becoming more and more like their criminal counterparts in conventional organized crime. Logically organized and highly readable, the text promotes learning with extensive pedagogical features, from critical thinking projects to suggested readings.

Teaching and Learning Experience

This book offers a current look at organized crime, examining emerging areas in the field. It provides:

  • Comprehensive, up-to-date coverage: Gives students the strong intellectual foundation they need to truly understand organized crime
  • A thorough examination of the role of drug trafficking in organized crime: Students learn the important role drug trafficking plays in the continuing proliferation of organized crime groups
  • Insights into terrorism as organized crime: Students are challenged to view traditional models of terrorism as a type of organized crime
  • Extensive pedagogical features: Gives students the tools to master key concepts faster and more effectively and provides support for instructors

The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories, by Marina Keegan

The instant New York Times bestseller and publishing phenomenon: Marina Keegan’s posthumous collection of award-winning essays and stories “sparkles with talent, humanity, and youth” (O, The Oprah Magazine).

Marina Keegan’s star was on the rise when she graduated magna cum laude from Yale in May 2012. She had a play that was to be produced at the New York Fringe Festival and a job waiting for her at The New Yorker. Tragically, five days after graduation, Marina died in a car crash.

Marina left behind a rich, deeply expansive trove of writing that, like her title essay, captures the hope, uncertainty, and possibility of her generation. Her short story “Cold Pastoral” was published on NewYorker.com. Her essay “Even Artichokes Have Doubts” was excerpted in the Financial Times, and her book was the focus of a Nicholas Kristof column in The New York Times. Millions of her contemporaries have responded to her work on social media.

As Marina wrote: “We can still do anything. We can change our minds. We can start over…We’re so young. We can’t, we MUST not lose this sense of possibility because in the end, it’s all we have.” The Opposite of Loneliness is an unforgettable collection of Marina’s essays and stories that articulates the universal struggle all of us face as we figure out what we aspire to be and how we can harness our talents to impact the world. “How do you mourn the loss of a fiery talent that was barely a tendril before it was snuffed out? Answer: Read this book. A clear-eyed observer of human nature, Keegan could take a clever idea...and make it something beautiful” (People).

Amazon.com Review
J. R. Moehringer About J. R. Moehringer

J. R. Moehringer, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 2000, is a former national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times. Author of the bestselling memoir, The Tender Bar, he is also the co-author of Open by Andre Agassi. His most recent publication is Sutton, published in 2012.

J. R. Moehringer on Marina Keegan

I never met Marina Keegan, but when I learned of her death I felt as if I'd known her well. We belonged to several of the same tribes. We were both Yalies. We were both from the Northeast. Both Irish, both writers. We walked some of the same paths, probably sat in the same chairs. So it was as if I’d lost a close cousin, or even a kid sister.

Then I read her work. In that terrible week, as media outlets posted her essays, as people around the world reposted them, I read every word with a sinking, quickening heart. The first news reports, I felt, had been wrong - this wasn’t simply a promising young writer, this was a prodigy, a rare rare talent, still raw, still evolving, but shockingly mature. From the few things she’d published in her brief life I could project a remarkable career, a line of words stretching far into the future, words that would have thrilled and enlightened, words that might have changed people’s lives. As I grieved for her family, her friends, her boyfriend, I also grieved for the global community of readers who would never know the pleasure and excitement of a brand new book by Marina Keegan.

Marina Keegan

All of which made me think there should be, there must be, at least one book with Marina’s name on the spine. Publishers aren’t eager to take chances these days, but I hoped that one would have the guts, the heart, to make a slim, posthumous collection of Marina’s stories and essays and poems. I could actually see the book in my mind, stacked on the front table of a sunlit bookstore, perhaps the Yale bookstore, where I’m sure Marina dreamed about her work appearing one day.

A year later, it came in the mail, the very book I’d seen in my mind, with the only possible title: The Opposite of Loneliness. I studied the striking cover photo and felt a wave of sorrow and joy. Then I sat down and read it and that sorrow-joy feeling became my constant companion over the next several days.

This is a book full of wonders. This is a book full of sentences that any writer, 21 or 101, would be proud to have authored. This is a book that will speak to young readers, because it expresses some of that inexpressible anxiety of starting out, of making life's first momentous choices, of wanting and fearing and needing and hoping and dreading everything at the same time. It will also speak to older readers, because it’s an inspiring reminder of youth’s brimming energy, its quivering sense of possibility.

Young people get a bad rap for thinking they’re immortal, and acting accordingly, but Marina dwelled on the end. Hers, civilization’s, the sun’s. “And time, that takes survey of all the world, must have a stop.” She must have heard her beloved adviser Harold Bloom expound many times on Hotspur’s line, and clearly she took it to heart, personalized it. Savor every half-second, she seemed to be saying, to herself, to her readers, and her meditations on death, once charmingly precocious, now feel breathtakingly premonitory. Describing a group of fifty whales beached near her house on Cape Cod, she laments that their songs don’t transmit on land, and thus they can’t communicate their final thoughts. “I imagined dying slowly next to my mother or a lover, helplessly unable to relay my parting message.”

Such was her fate. And yet it wasn't, not really. This book is her parting message, exquisitely relayed.

And it’s not a mournful message. There’s so much light and humor here. In the title essay alone I hear glimmers of Lorrie Moore, Ann Beattie, Fran Lebowitz. For example, when Marina worries that other kids are sprinting ahead of her, embarking on fabulous careers while she’s still clinging to the cocoon of Yale. “Some of us have focused ourselves. Some of us know exactly what we want and are on the path to get it; already going to med school, working at the perfect NGO, doing research. To you I say both congratulations and you suck.”

My favorite passage might be this gorgeous burst of nostalgia, this prose poem about the bright college years. “When the check is paid and you stay at the table. When it’s four a.m. and no one goes to bed. That night with the guitar. That night we can’t remember. That time we did, we went, we saw, we laughed, we felt. The hats.”

The hats. That tiny sentence was the first raindrop before the deluge, a tickling hint of all that was to come. How many 21-year-olds are capable of a line so sure-handed, so precisely and comically placed? The only other two-word sentence I can think of that had me laughing aloud and shaking my head was in Lolita. (Humbert summarizing his mother’s demise: “Picnic, lightning. ”)

If I’d met Marina, I’d have urged her to keep these first hopeful essays handy, cherish their energy, refer to them whenever beset by despair and doubt. Instead I’ll have to give that advice to her readers.

I also might have told Marina that we do have a word for the opposite of loneliness. It’s called reading. Again, I’ll have to tell her readers. This book reminds us: as long as there are books, we’re never completely alone. Open it anywhere and Marina’s voice leaps off the page, uncommonly honest, forever present. With this lovely book always at hand, we and Marina will never be completely apart.

Review
“In her brief life Marina Keegan managed to achieve a precocious literary mastery. Her wry, wise, lyrical voice is unforgettable, and her vital, exuberant spirit reminds us powerfully to seize the day. Though every sentence throbs with what might have been, this remarkable collection is ultimately joyful and inspiring, because it represents the wonder that she was.” (J.R. Moehringer, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author of The Tender Bar)

"I will never cease mourning the loss of my beloved former student Marina Keegan. This book gives partial evidence of the extraordinary promise that departed with her. Throughout she manifests authentic dramatic invention and narrative skill. Beyond all those, she makes a vital appeal to everyone in her generation not to waste their gifts in mere professionalism but instead to invest their youthful pride and exuberance both in self-development and in the improvement of our tormented society.” (Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities and English, Yale University)

"Many of my students sound forty years old. They are articulate but derivative, their own voices muffled by their desire to skip over their current age and experience, which they fear trivial, and land on some version of polished adulthood without passing Go. Marina was twenty-one and sounded twenty-one: a brainy twenty-one, a twenty-one who knew her way around the English language, a twenty-one who understood that there were few better subjects than being young and uncertain and starry-eyed and frustrated and hopeful. When she read her work aloud around our seminar table, it would make us snort with laughter, and then it would turn on a dime and break our hearts." (Anne Fadiman, Yale University Professor of English and Francis Writer in Residence and author of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and Ex Libris)

"Illuminates the optimism and neurosis felt by new grads everywhere. . .Like every millenial who's seen irony elevated to an art form, Keegan brings self-awareness to the collective insecurity of her peers even as she captures it with a precision that only comes from someone who feels it too. How unfortunate that she will never know the value readers will find in her work." (Publishers Weekly)

"Funny, poignant, tender, and fiercely alive, 'The Opposite of Loneliness' contains the keen observations of a short lifetime—and the wisdom of a much longer one." (Jennifer DuBois, author of Cartwheel and A Partial History of Lost Causes)

“The writing Marina Keegan left behind offers a tantalizing taste of a literary voice still in development, yet already imbued with unusual insight, nuance, humor, and sensitivity.” (Deborah Treisman, Fiction Editor, "The New Yorker")

“Two years after a young writer’s death, her words soar. . . . The Opposite of Loneliness...sparkles with talent, humanity, and youth. The prose, polished but thoroughly unselfconscious, is heartbreaking evidence of what could have been.” (O Magazine)

"A bittersweet, what-might-have-been book filled with youthful optimism, energy, honesty, and beyond-her-years wisdom." (Yale Alumni Magazine)

"The Opposite of Loneliness captures in both fiction and nonfiction [Keegan's] adventures in love and lust, the weird bliss of being stoned, and, as she writes, what it’s like to see 'everything in the world build up and then everything in the world fall down again.'" (Elle)

"Remarkable... a compelling literary voice... the appeal of this collection is its improvisational quality, its feeling of being unfinished but always questioning." (Chicago Tribune)

"How do you mourn the loss of a fiery talent that was barely a tendril before it was snuffed out? Answer: Read this book. A clear-eyed observer of human nature, [Keegan] could take a clever idea...and make it something beautiful." (People Magazine)

"A triumph...Keegan was right to prod us all to reflect on what we seek from life." (Nicholas Kristof, "The New York Times")

"The Opposite of Loneliness does [Keegan's] talent and memory justice, both as a picture of a generation entering adulthood and as a highly personal portrait of a gifted young woman." (Pittsburgh-Post Gazette)

“What a gift Keegan has left behind. Not only in her written words...but also in her legacy of social activism and fierce belief in leading a life of purpose, not privilege. (Joseph P. Kahn, Boston Globe)

“Keegan’s fiction… is built around the kind of empathetic extrapolation that makes for all the best realism… Keegan would have been—would have continued to be—a star. She would have been famous, not quietly or vaguely, but really, really famous.” (The New Republic)

“[Keegan ] was one of the most present, incisive, and hopeful writers.… That’s the gift and the pain of her book. How incredible, how lucky, that we get to read her words, that people who never knew her or her work can find it for themselves, that she was in some way given the chance to speak to the world the way she wanted.” (Buzzfeed)

“A glimpse of a young woman who is growing as a writer and a person, someone who’s thinking deeply about love and the world around her and the scale of the universe….I have no doubt she would have been great.” (Bustle)

“In the little time [Keegan] graced the world she created a life’s work many writers could only dream of achieving in decades.” (MariaShriver.com)

“This posthumous collection of essays and short stories is beautiful and brilliant, young but not childish—just like the author was. Every essay is a gem you want to pick up and put in your pocket, taking it out from time to time to see how it looks in different lights—the lights of promise and potential, yearning and memory. The Opposite of Loneliness will make people cry and hope.” (Rewire Me)

“The loveliest piece of writing I’ve ever seen from someone so young… Her voice is steady and often very funny, her senses of character and pace are frighteningly good, and the flow of her prose is easy to get carried away by. She wasn't just college-talented; she was talented, period.” (Kevin Roose, New York Magazine)

“A new voice of her generation.” (The Hartford Courant)

"Wonderful... Marina Keegan did that thing we all want to do as writers: say what everyone else is thinking, but better." (Refinery29)

""Inspirational." (The Huffington Post)

"Full of uncanny wisdom...Marina would not want to be remembered because she was dead. She would want to be remembered because she’s good. No worries there, Marina. You left us aching for more." (Detroit News)

"A talented voice, silenced too soon, endures...throughout there are reminders of the talent of this forever-22-year-old." (The Improper Bostonian)

An excellent first book.. and last
By Frank A. Juliano
It's poignant enough that this gifted writer died at 22. Such promise. But Keegan writes about death -- her own, the planet's -- and her drive to do something meaningful with her life. It's a beautiful book, astonishingly insightful and ultimately heartbreaking.

But one of Keegan's professors at Yale wrote that "Marina wouldn't want you to read her book because she is dead, but because it is good.'' It is very good. Please read it.

I might be too old for this book...
By Laptantidel Latuda
Based on all the good reviews, I expected a collection of stories that portrays the twenty-something generation in an original way. However, when I read this book, I felt like reading a string of essays from a college-kid (which I guess is precisely what this book is), but I searched in vain to find that special spark that I believed this book would have. I could not see originality in these texts, they felt like any other of the thousands of college or post-college writers in the blogosphere or in print could have written this - more or less mature thoughts about first time experiences, about the uncertainties in their young lives, about weird or awkward situations their parents never prepared them for. The stories are nice enough for sure, but to me they lack any character that could not be found elsewhere. I also quickly grew quite bored of the privileged college girl perspective that permeates this book, and I did not manage to finish reading it. I think it is a very nice way to remember a young promising writer who died in an accident by publishing her writings, and I think it is great to read her prose and marvel at the endless possibilities of what may one day become of her. Keegan was only starting to explore her potential, and the book reflects that she had not really blossomed, yet. Maybe the younger readers will find the special appeal in this book that I could not. To me, Keegan portrays the twenty-something generation in a way that it has been portrayed in countless times before.

Some of the most powerful writing I've seen

Writing an honest review for any book can be difficult, but this type of book is especially difficult. Marina was already garnering praise before she graduated: her essay "Opposite of Loneliness" went viral, she graduated magna cum laude from Yale, a job all lined up, things being published...and she died tragically five days after she graduated. It's not the type of book that you want to write and say that you didn't like, for fear of pitchforks and torches and shouts. But, here's the thing...I don't have to write that type of review. Honestly.

This book is many things: a grieving process for the family, a memorial to a friend, and more importantly a powerful monument to a writer that is able to distill the essence of humanity onto paper. The book is composed of several different parts: the introduction essay that the book takes its title from "The Opposite of Loneliness," several of Marina's short stories, and several of her essays. Intermixed in are quotes and snippets from poems that she wrote, although these are not shown in full, at least not in this galley copy. All in all it captures some of the best work of this young writer.

The first quote we see is from Marina's poem Bygones: "Do you wanna leave soon?''No, I want enough time to be in love with everything. And I cry because everything is so beautiful and so short."

The title essay, "The Opposite of Loneliness" went viral after it was published. And you really don't have to stretch to understand why, as its something that many of us can relate to. While it is written about graduating from college, it also applies to the leaving of home, of a comfort zone, of going off into the unknown. And while there have been hundreds of writers that have written about this topic before, Marina's take is different. She states simply, and eloquently, that the feeling of leaving the known is scary. Of walking away from having friends right next door, of structure, and everything taken care of is one of the scariest things possible. And all of these people saying "oh this is the best time of your life, cherish it" makes you afraid of what's to come. But Marina stands up and says, my life isn't over, I'm going to continue to have fun until I'm old. And while there are many things to quote this one "What we have to remember is that we can still do anything. We can change our minds. We can start over." Life isn't over because of moving on, it's just beginning.

While there are several of Marina's stories in the book, they didn't stand out to me as much. Not because they aren't good, but because her essays are that much better. In the essays that are shared, it seems obvious a couple of them are school assignments. The first one is about her first car. Now in the hands of most college students they would write about how awesome and cool the car was, or how stupid it was they were driving the station wagon that had been in the family for 10 years. Probably something with a few laughs, but not memorable. Marina's essay though...is different. Marina doesn't just write about the car, but she connects it to her essence. We learn how the car came to her after her grandfather passed away and her grandmother wanted to only have one car. That when she got the keys for it she and her grandmother drove stopped, listened to an old tape of a favorite artist, and opened the moonroof to look out, and smiled. That the car had the scent of her grandmother's perfume in it for a long time, that it was organized like her with a spare sewing kit and other items, until gradually it became Marina's. The tin foil balls from breakfast biscuits on the way to school on the driver's side door, the dents in the steering wheel from her fingernails after crying because a boy just wanted to be friends, the smells and papers that lived in the car. Until it was time to pass it on to her brother and she wondered if she could recapture the scent of her grandmother's perfume one more time. You can't but help be entrapped by that overwhelming feeling of humanity. She paints a picture with her words and you can see it before you and get swept up in it all.

And her other essays are no less powerful. We read and nod along as she describes growing up and wanting to fit in and she could...except for her diet. Because she needed to be gluten free, before anyone else knew what that meant. And we understand and cringe at the embarrassment she felt as her mom tried to keep her healthy and safe, but made her feel singled out. We understand the constant struggle of wanting to belong, but of having to follow a diet, but balancing the needs of family, but wanting to be normal college girl and not worry about kissing a boy after he drank a beer or ate a pizza. Or in the essay where she writes about beached whales, and the tens of thousands of dollars spent in rescuing them, but we do nothing for the homeless in front of us, but the whales are special, but are fellow humans are right there. Marina makes us proud and sad of our humanity. She captures it so expertly and shows us what we're doing that is so right...and so wrong.

Marina died young and while we may mourn that, we are left with her essays and other writings that have the power to change the world. And while that may be an over used phrase, I think it accurately describes Marina's style. Her ability to capture the very essence of humanity! and to distill it onto paper, to share raw emotions with you via words and make you feel what she does...tis a rare gift and talent. While Marina may be gone, we need to read and reread what she has written and take it to heart. Let it give us chills, fear, hope, anger...whatever emotion it brings to you, let it come.

I highly recommend this book to all readers. 4 out of 5
