The dictionary represents a new generation of Arabic language reference materials designed to help English speakers gain proficiency in colloquial Arabic. Thoroughly updated, expanded, and enhanced, this dictionary supersedes the seminal Iraqi dictionaries originally published by Georgetown University Press in the 1960s and then reissued in the early 2000s.

Created in cooperation with Georgetown University Press and the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) of the University of Pennsylvania, this new dictionary draws from the LDC's extensive lexical database of colloquial Iraqi, and includes more than a thirty percent increase in terms for contemporary speech than found in the original dictionaries.

This comprehensive reference focuses on conversation, emphasizing the colloquial speech of educated residents of Baghdad. The dictionary assumes familiarity with the Arabic alphabet, the standard organization of Arabic dictionaries along the triconsonantal root system, and the formation of Arabic verb forms.

Miles better, could be improved.

This is MILES better than the original georgetown. The fact that they included actual arabic letters is fantastic, and the hardcover is an added bonus. My only complaint is that they don't include چ or گ in the dictionary, which are pretty much strictly Iraqi, and are the start of many words. I know that many times I can change a چ to a ج and a گ to a ق but it would be nice to see it in there already. Also, tip: if the root may be MSA, there's a large chance it isn't in this dictionary, so you will definitely need to supplement this one with either the Oxford or the Hans Wehr.

Electronic Project Design and Fabrication, Fifth Edition, offers a complete experience in the design and fabrication of electronic prototype projects. Whether you are enrolled in a traditional lecture and laboratory class or a fabrication course devoted entirely to the subject, this book provides the hands-on experience in project building and documentation every prospective electronics technician requires.

A project, however, is not all you will be developing as you progress through the text. You will also be building confidence in your ability to construct electronic devices. The know-how to take a project from an initial concept through to final construction with support documentation is sure to give you pride and self-assurance as you enter the electronics industry. Electronic Project Design and Fabrication will prepare you for that exciting moment.

Think of yourself as a technician on the job. Your supervisor presents you with a project idea designed to fill a need or to solve a problem. You must determine if the idea is feasible and, if so, build a working prototype project and develop an accompanying Project Report.

The project should resemble the final, mass-produced product. You must design the circuit, breadboard it, design and fabricate a printed circuit board, and then enclose the project in a functional and attractive case. The Project Report is to include appropriate written and graphic documentation. It delineates various troubleshooting and test procedures, summarizes project developments, and contains the 10-drawing set used to construct the prototype project.

In project construction, you have a choice of three approaches. In the first approach, you choose to build the Sample Project—the Variable Power Supply. This project progresses from chapter to chapter, starting with the two-step design process and ending with a completely packaged and tested prototype project, along with necessary documentation.

The Exercise Project, the 3-Channel Color Organ, is at a slightly higher level of difficulty. Because less help is provided in building this project, you'll have to do a bit of digging and developing on your own. The Exercise Project also is carried from chapter to chapter.

Finally, 30 Elective Projects are presented in Part III. Only Concepts and Requirements Documents and circuit design sketches are provided. Here you will need to develop specific project design and fabrication details on your own.

Although the project construction and documentation motivate you to progress from one chapter to the next, Electronic Project Design and Fabrication is more than a project book. The fundamentals of prototype project design, fabrication, and documentation are a part of every chapter. Even if you elect not to construct a project (a most unlikely occurrence), you will gain a firmer understanding of electronic device fabrication after studying the book.

The fifth edition of Electronic Project Design and Fabrication represents an up-to-date revision of a well-received text. New material has been added, including the following: "Something to Think About" minisections have been added at the end of every section. Students will find these suggestions for further inquiry inspiring. Chapter summaries have been updated to better lead into the material to come. Searching for electronic component sources has become easier, via the Internet. In Chapter 3 we explain how best to do this. In Chapter 7, a section has been added on PC board trace-width spacing. Electronics Workbench material in Chapter 3 has been revised to include a discussion of MultiSim V6.2. Material on computer-aided design (CAD), in Chapter 11, has been revised. Five new elective projects have been added in Chapter 17. Two new appendices have been added: Appendix J lists electronic kit sources, and Appendix K lists electronic project design and fabrication web sites to visit. In addition, Appendix G has been revised to include additional published sources for technical writers. New terms have been added to the glossary.

This book is an excellent starting point in the electronic engineering. The book is written for students and technicians, "not for engineers"; however, the author keeps a high academic level and covers all the topics of electronic engineering: design process, prototyping, CAD technologies, and documentation. I suggest the author to write other book like this one, focused on graduated engineers, with an industrial approach.......

Had to get it for a class, it's good because it doesn't assume too much prior knowledge. The authors should make DVD there is alot of stuff on YouTube but so much of it is poor audio/video quality.

A GREAT book for kids interested in electronics

An excellent book for kids beginning electronics. The book is laid out in a fashion that builds confidence and knowledge for later chapters. It is written in a fun and engaging way - my ten year old loves it and the projects thus far. The breadboard projects are his preference as parts can then be re-purposed for other projects. This books provides a variety of projects not found in other sources. Highly recommend!

Possibly too textbookish to interest kids who are not already motivated

This book could have been infinitely better with a small packet of parts.

This is a great catalog of projects which motivated kids can refer to. The pictures are good and the instructions are great. Each project is explained in a step by step manner with a description of what is happening.

However, one thing that I felt was unfortunate was that the book expects the reader to go out and acquire all the parts on his own. It seems like attaching a small box of basic parts (an LED, zinc/copper pins, pre-stripped wires, breadboard, etc) would have gone far to really bootstrap a kid receiving this.

As it is, the book is great in what it does, which is provide project ideas and detailed information to support motivated kids. However if it increased its scope just a little bit it could be an enormously useful and fun thing.

“The book under review is what one would always like to have on one’s desk. It is informative, factual, well-referenced, exhaustive and extremely well illustrated. It immediately grasps one’s attention not only because it gives practical tips throughout, but also because of its rich and profuse illustrations. How richly is the book illustrated can be gauged by the fact that there are a total of more than 1800 photographs (all in full color) scattered over 671 pages of text – about 3 photographs per page!
There are some other interesting features in this book too, which set it apart from other run-of-the-mill kind of texts. One which I especially liked – and am sure, most others will like too – is a feature called “take home message”. You can read the text and cases, and then the editors will tend to drive home the point through this feature. This feature should be most useful for younger pathologists and those in training for whom this book is an absolute must.
The book is full of such practical tips throughout. To my mind the two most valuable features of this book are its rich and profuse illustrations and its practical tips. Most current books are deficient in these.
This book can be heartily recommended not only to trainees and younger pathologists, who obviously would benefit greatly from this book, but also to senior pathologists if only to re-alert them to certain common pitfalls. Certainly everyone would get to see a number of unique cases irrespective of the level of his experience.
Besides pathologists at whom this book is mainly aimed, it should also prove useful for police officers, coroners, magistrates and all other law enforcement officers. Illustrative photographs should prove useful to this section. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and this book is going to my companion for the rest of my life.”

About the Author
David Dolinak is Chief Medical Examiner for Austin, TX. He has published and lectured extensively in the neurosciences and forensic pathology. In conjunction with Evan Matshes he has produced the very well received text “Medicolegal Neuropathology: A Color Atlas.”

Evan Matshes is the Assistant Chief Medical Examiner for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He has published and lectured extensively in human anatomy and osteology, the neurosciences, and forensic pathology. In addition to his aforementioned textbook publishing, he was also a co-author on “An Atlas of Human Osteology”, released in 2000 in Canada.

An amazing book

It is just unbelieveable.The collection of photographs is the best that i have come across. I have several forensic pathology books in my collection and this book has the best collection of real life photographs. The authours have stressed in almost all chapters of the limitations of the findings. This is admirable.Training as a forensic physician and a lawyer, this book is of great help.

Great book!!!!!

This book is really helpful. It covers a wide range of forensics pathology topics and provides rich and detailed information on these topics. It can be used as a "forensics pathology for dummies" book as well as a reference book for confirmed pathologists.

And last but not least, it is full of very good color pictures (forget the usual black and white pics which provide poor information, color pictures are so realistic and so much better!), and generally speaking its look and feels are very pleasant.

I read this thing cover to cover and it was time well spent. Lots of high-quality full color photographs illustrating important post mortem findings. The book is organized intelligently and includes chapters that take the reader beyond the core topics of "blunt trauma" or "gunshot wounds" etc. The text is clear and easy to understand but also quite thorough. That being said, the text is not quite as comprehensive as Spitz and Fisher, and there is room for much expansion without compromising the merits of this book. A new edition appears to be coming out later this year and though the content of this first edition needs little revision, I hope it is greatly expanded.

The "Apocalypse" of Narnia

The world of Narnia is coming to an end. A false Aslan is abroad in the land, and the people (and beasts) struggle to follow what they think is the truth. Eustace and Jill, from The Silver Chair, are sent to Narnia to help the last king of that land rally his troops for the final battle.

This is the apocalyptic volume of The Chronicles of Narnia. If The Magician's Nephew speaks of a creation reminiscent of the book of Genesis, this book speaks of an end reminiscent of that foretold in the book of Revelation. Here, everything comes to an end, and the entire purpose of the existence of Narnia is finally explained by Aslan. The Christian references are unmistakable. Aslan, like the Biblical Christ in Revelation, triumphantly comes to bring an end to his world and save his people. Most of the material in this book is very Christian-like, all the way down to the separating of the creatures on the right and left hands of Aslan.

This, the final volume of the Chronicles, brings everything to a head. This book provides the so-called meaning of life, and gives validity and value to all of the good deeds the children have been trying to do since the first book. Here, the good have their reward. The descriptions in this book (especially the end) are absolutely beautiful, and the finale is nothing short of moving. Lewis, a master of Christian apology, succeeds here in bringing to life the Christian concept of the end of the world, and of the final rewards of the just. No part of the Chronicles of Narnia would be complete without the vision afforded by this, the final book.

Voyaging

The second volume of the Narnia Chronicles closed with the possibility of Lucy and Edmund -- though not their older siblings -- returning to Narnia. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" makes good on that story, with the intrepid pair (plus a whiny cousin) returning on a strange sea voyage.

After the events of "Prince Caspian," Lucy and Edmund are sent off to stay with their obnoxious cousin Eustace. But when they admire a picture of a strange ship, suddenly all three kids are sucked in -- and land in a Narnian sea. On board the ship is King Caspian, now fully grown, who is determined to find a bunch of knights exiled by his murderous uncle, even if he has to go to the edge of the world (literally).

Lucy and Edmund are thrilled to be back in Narnia again, but Eustance proceeds to make trouble any way he can, complaining and causing trouble among the crew. But there are problems more horrifying than any of them can guess, from dragons to sinister "gold water" to a region filled with their worst nightmares.

"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is one of Lewis's most original and tightly-written Narnian adventures. It's also a bit of a break from form. After two books of battles against evil tyrants, "Voyage" simply goes where no man/woman/mouse has gone before, and gives us a view of the Narnian world as more than one isolated little region.

And in some ways, it's also the darkest Chronicle. Lewis explores the theme of greed here -- greed for power, beauty, money and magic -- and has some scenes both chilling and majestic. But his archly humorous style peeks through in several places, whether it's pompous mouse Reepicheep or tea with a reclusive old wizard.

Edmund and Lucy are their usual plucky selves, albeit a bit more mature than before. But "Voyage" also introduces one of Lewis' most interesting characters in Eustace Clarence Scrubb. Like Edmund, Eustace is initially a peevish, lying boy who generally makes trouble, but slowly learns his errors. But unlike Edmund, Eustace doesn't have to ally himself to the baddie to learn that.

"Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was a turning point for the Narnia Chronicles, as well as the one that began venturing into darker territory. Engaging and tightly written.

questing after the Kingdom

I have put off reviewing "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" for a long time. There is no other book I have so longed to recommend to others, but I have felt (and still feel) totally inadequate when it comes to expressing what a wonderful story this is. I could go on for days about all the wonderful things contained here. That said, I will try and focus on only a few aspects of this book and then plead with you to read it.
First, I must note that I feel this story should be read in the context of the entire Narnian series. It stands on its own nicely enough, but the deep background of the previous tales adds richness and texture to the tale.
Secondly, I must note that this book is highly enjoyable because it works on two levels. The tale as a whole is the story of a journey into unknown lands. With each new place they visit, the whole is broken into wonderful episodes. My favorite episode (with the exception of the ending) is the island where dreams come true...its not what one would expect.
The character of Eustace is my favorite of all the humans in the Narnian books. This story is partly a tale of his transformation. This seems to be a universal human desire; but Eustace, like all who truly seek transformation must, finds impossible to reform himself. This is an especially timely lesson for our "self-help" culture at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
This brings me to what I like best of "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." Let me preface what I say here by making it clear that no one hates heavy-handed use of allegory as much as I do. However, the allegory that is "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is one of the greatest things of beauty I have ever encountered.
In one form or another we are all questing after an unseen kingdom. Be it the kingdom of God, Materialism, or simply of the Self--we are all, like Caspian and his pals, on a quest. I don't wish to give away any endings, but let me just say that the greatest truth Lewis expresses in his book is that no one can reach the True Kingdom on their own.
I urge you to read this book. If I could only have a handful of books, this one would definitely be among them. I give "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" my highest recommendation.

About the Author
Samuel T. Gladding is a professor of counseling in the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University. He is a Fellow in the American Counseling Association and its past president. Gladding has also been president of the American Association of State Counseling Boards (AASCB) and Chi Sigma Iota (counseling academic and professional honor society international). A prolific writer, Gladding is the author of 41 books (including revisions), over seven dozen refereed journal articles, and five training videos. He has twice been a Fulbright Specialist (China and Turkey), an external evaluator of counseling programs in Malaysia, and a mental health responder after the terrorists’ attack of 9/11 in New York and the shootings at Virginia Tech.

A seventh edition in need of significant overhaul

This is a fine book for an overview of group therapy if the reader understands context. While it pays lip service to multiculturalism and diversity, the bias in this book is very male and pretty much Caucasian. Men formed consciousness-raising groups because they were threatened by the women's movement? And the women's groups listed are mostly "victim" groups or women struggling to identify themselves as something other than caregivers? Doesn't really reflect modern groups for women. And the idea that college women would need to attend groups to prevent "date violence" (source for that note-1996) is outdated and sad. Women are more than victims or potential victims. The references fall into the 2010-present range very rarely--lots of 20th-century references to be expected in a text about a profession that was born in that century. But in this case, it seems to be indicative of a need for a more serious overhaul. This is a seventh edition and it seems to have evolved little from its first incarnation in 1991.
