Courtney Smith Kramer is the co-founder and Executive Creative Director for PureMatter, and is proud to be one of the 3% of female creative directors in the United States. An accomplished creative strategist, storyteller, writer and designer, she has earned hundreds of creative awards and jurors creative competitions across the county. She has a wicked dirty sense of humor and swears like a sailor but has to be serious (mostly) for her job. Her first book, "21 Reasons Creativity is Like Sex," launched in Fall 2016.

A spoonful of adult humor helps the practical advice go down

Courtney Smith Kramer is Tom Cruise to my Cuba Gooding Jr., and she's got me shouting “show me the money!” right back at her through my kitchen cordless with this one.

Courtney slips straight-up real talk and data from science and anecdotes from actual people—who also know what they're taking about and also probably like being creative and having sex and social things—into a handsome package, sweetened with that's-what-she-saids and playful and jokes that any respectable teenage boy would snicker at too.

The author’s words poke each of us in the shoulder with a stern, unbent, Uncle Sam-looking index finger to say, “you're so money and don't even know or remember it, lady or man!!” and we don't feel the pain because we're still reeling at [peaceful, penis-fencing monkeys or “soft-handed windshield wiper action” or organizing a gynecocratic revolution or buying new loudspeakers].

You had me at "That's what she said"

I have a stack of books to read but I fast-tracked this book to the top of the list and read it right away. Courtney is the voice in my head when it comes to #ThatsWhatSheSaid; add in the massive amounts of facts, theories and concepts and you get this book. I have a critical thinking mind but have always had an aversion to the word "creativity" as I can't draw my way out of a paper bag or color within the lines. Kudos to Courtney for drawing parallels between creativity and sex; each chapter is an eye-opener and a mind-bender on how to jump start your creative mind. I feel smarter & inspired after reading "21 Reasons Creativity Is Like Sex" - isn't that the goal of any book?!

One Reason I Like Twenty-One Reasons

Iconoclastically creative Courtney Smith Kramer lures us into her world with the promise of a giggle and a bit of titillation, and then keeps us there. We find ourselves staying for the delight, the wit, the love of the topic. While others might have written the definitive tome on the subject, CSK uses her creativity to further reinforce her ideas. Breeze over a chapter, come back, go deeper, skim, repeat. It doesn’t matter how you attack her work and that is the beauty of her style. She proves her point on creativity by her very expression of it. It is beautifully pointed out that it is not linear and it is not metered. Creativity can be channeled and directed, if you know how. These ideas benefit not only those who consider themselves creative, but anyone who desires to find the best outcome to their obstacles. Without a doubt, this book will fully exercise your biggest sex organ (That would be your brain. Pervert!)

About the Author
John W. Mullins John Mullins is Associate Professor of Management Practice at London Business School, where he heads the entrepreneurship group. He earned his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and, considerably later in life, his PhD in marketing from the University of Minnesota. An award-winning teacher, John brings to his teaching and research 20 years of executive experience in high-growth firms, including two ventures he founded, one of which he took public. Since becoming a business school professor in 1992, John has published more than 30 articles in a variety of outlets, including Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Product Innovation Management, and the Journal of Business Venturing. His research has won national and international awards from the Marketing Science Institute, the American Marketing Association, and the Richard D. Irwin Foundation. He is also co-author of Marketing Management: A Strategic Decision-Making Approach, 5th edition. His recent trade book, The New Business Road Test: What Entrepreneurs and Executives Should Do Before Writing a Business Plan, is the definitive work on the assessment and shaping of market opportunities.

Orville C. Walker, Jr. Orville C. Walker, Jr. is Professor Emeritus in the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, where he served until recently as the James D. Watkins Professor of Marketing and Director of the PhD Program. He holds a Master’s degree in social psychology from the Ohio State University and a PhD in marketing from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Orville is the co-author of three books and has published more than 50 research articles in scholarly and business journals. He has won several awards for his research, including the O’Dell award from the Journal of Marketing Research, the Maynard award from the Journal of Marketing, and a lifetime achievement award from the Sales Management Interest Group of the American Marketing Association. Orville has been a consultant to a number of business firms and not-for-profit organisations, and he has taught in executive development programs around the world, including programs in Poland, Switzerland, Scotland and Hong Kong. Maureen Fergus writes books for young readers of all ages. Her picture books include And What If I Won't? and The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten. Maureen's writing has appeared in magazines such as Today's Parent, Chatelaine and Reader's Digest. Her novels include The Gypsy King trilogy, Exploits of a Reluctant (But Extremely Goodlooking) Hero, Recipe for Disaster and Ortega, which won the McNally Robinson Book for Young People Award. She lives in Winnipeg with her husband, their three kids, a fish, a dog and a hedgehog.

Dušan Petričić was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and graduated from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Applied Arts and Design. His political cartoons and illustrations have regularly appeared in major newspapers and magazines in Europe and North America. As co-author and/or illustrator, he has created more than forty children's books and is the recipient of many prestigious international awards. While pursuing his own career as an artist, Dušan has taken time to teach students illustration and animation.

My Kids Approved!

I want to start out by saying that I absolutely love the illustrations! Dušan Petričić is talented! It is fun how the picture components are placed in multiple boxes on the page. This helps a child (or you) to easily focus on the photo and associate it with each bit of text. The odd angles of the text and photos make the page interesting. The colors are beautiful and the caricatures…well, they are awesome according to my son and I agree.

I read this story with my eight year old son and my six-year-old daughter. When we finished I asked them what they thought about the book. No other audience really matters since InvisiBill is a children’s book. My son looked at me and said it was cool. My daughter just smiled and gave me a thumbs up. That is actually pretty high praise for my wiggly jiggly daughter.

Throughout our reading and upon completion of the book we spent a bit of time talking through the story. This time was well spent as I could tell that there were components of InvisiBill that they didn’t understand and they had some observations that made me smile. Each child views a story through the lens of their own perceptions and experiences but here are some pieces of our conversation:

When we reached the point where “the wonderful, terrible thing that happened” happened. My daughter thought that the family would notice right away and that they would miss Bill. I explained what was really occurring and we moved along.

My kids could understand Bill’s frustration with busy parents and siblings engaged in their own interests.

We all thought that Bill’s hair looked like an orange pineapple as opposed to a pumpkin as it is described in the story.

A great laugh was had at my expense when the peanut butter and pickle sandwich popped up in the story and I was delighted. We haven’t heard of many people even knowing about them let alone willing to try them. I live in a family of six and ALL of them make fun of me when I eat one. I have loved them since I was a kid so I wish that I could be invisible and eat one in peace and quiet. So now Ms. Fergus needs to write a book about having others pay too much attention to what you are doing ;).

As a mother, I believe InvisiBill is a great story to read with your children and to spend a few moments discussing. We all feel invisible sometimes and this story is a good reminder to parents to set aside family time without allowing distractions. It is also good for a child to hear that other kids feel the same way and that they truly are loved even when they don’t feel like it.

As my son hopped out of the room after story time he looked back at me and said again that the book was cool. High marks!

There is a lesson in this book - can you find it?

Isn't it every kid's dream to be invisible? Just imagine the stuff you could do. But sometimes, being invisible isn't what it's cracked up to be. Especially when you need a little attention. Or your potato.Bill's family is very busy. Busy texting, phoning, reading and watching TV. At.the.supper.table!

Suddenly Bill disappears and no one seems to notice. He's so unhappy because it seems that everyone is so occupied with their other activities that he is no longer important to them. It's only when the garbage needs to be taken out that his family flies into panic mode when they realize that they can't find him.

There is a lesson in this book - can you find it?

Plenty of amusing illustrations, a hysterically funny doctor and goofy siblings make this children's book a fun read.

A Great Pleasure

I love fantasy books but more and more they tend to get vulgar and worldly. Forman is able to tell a fascinating story and still keep it clean and even teaches a good morals in each of his books. I would have to say that Albrek's Tomb is my Favorite but is followed closely by Slathbogs Gold.

Thank You Forman and keep writing.

Excellent! Must read for adults and young adults! This author is really entertaining and weaves an impressive story.

Audio CD review

I read the book first before I bought a used version on audio CD (drat no audible version yet). I admit audible.com had me spoiled with only two parts to manage with "The Horn of Moran". However, Once I saw there was some used "Albrek's Tomb" audio CD's available at less than half the original cost, I went for it. It took a bit to buffer all the cd's to my computer, but then it transferred to my iphone quickly and off I went from there enjoying further great story reading from E.B. White. Yes, there were more breaks with the eleven cd's end being announced, but I loved E.B's voices, sound affects, and personalities he was able to bring to being, it barely caused me any issue. E.B really brings Alex and crew to life with Alex's voice showing he is still young and not fully sure of himself yet; Thrang's gruff dwarf voices, Kat's feminine voice, and many many others.
I had a slight giggle when one bit character sounded somewhat like Yoda. I will see if anyone else notices. It just made the reading that more fun. Also, I noted things as it was read that I didn't pick up from reading the book alone. So, yes, I would recommended purchasing the audio CD version of "Albrek's Tomb" for those who like E. B. White reading.

An Excellent Companion Gift!

I bought this book, along with the Rainstick Kit (available in Toys). It was a Christmas gift for a friend's child. She was able to read the book to learn about rainsticks. At the end of the book, it gave her instructions to make her own rainstick and she also make one from the Rainstick Kit. The story in the book was beautifully told and the pictures and colors were breathtaking. This is an excellent gift idea for someone who likes to both read and do. It is educational and fun and is a great gift idea!

Excellent literary fiction/memoir

I "read" Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay some years back (actually listened to an unabridged recording on tape while I was commuting regularly) and really enjoyed it. But that was the only one of his books I'd read until Moonglow landed in my lap.

Inspired by an extended conversation Chabon had with his maternal grandfather over a week or two when the old man was dying in 1989, this is a fictionalized account of his grandfather's extraordinary life. (As other reviewers have noted, he never uses his grandfather's--or grandmother's--name.) Throughout, I couldn't help but wonder which parts were true, which speculative, and unless Chabon enlightens us, I imagine we'll never know.

His grandfather's story begins when he's a boy and follows him through young adulthood, military service during WWII, married life (to a beautiful but mentally ill woman from France), a stint in prison (introduced in the first chapter, so I'm not giving anything away) and through to old age, assisted living and death. Chabon weaves his own story and that of his other family members in and among his grandfather's, and what results a web of secrets. A common thread in his grandfather's story is his love of space travel and rocketry--the old man had been an engineer.

Chabon's characters are complex,flawed and multidimensional, which is what makes the book so interesting. There's not a huge "wow" factor, with lots of dramatic plot twists, though there are compelling events. If you enjoy literary fiction and family sagas, it's a safe bet you'll enjoy Moonglow.

Moonglow, by Michael Chabon, tells a fictionalized history of his immediate family centered on being with his grandfather during the last two weeks before he succumbed to a painful cancer. His grandfather was a man not given to personal revelation, but under the influence of powerful painkillers and his imminent demise, he reveals the story of his life with Michael’s grandmother and mother. None of these key figures in Michael’s life are ever named, nor is his father. The reminiscences are possibly incorrect or self-serving as is Michael’s reportage. “Whatever liberties have been taken … they have been taken with due abandon.”

This novel takes the form of a non-linear narrative delving into the history reported by the grandfather on his deathbed. The grandfather was an engineer and has a history wound up in dreams of space travel from starting some time before WW II to the the landing on the moon and beyond. During WW II he was seeking to capture as much as possible of the Nazi missile program directed by Werner Von Braun. The grandfather helped liberate the V-2 complex and attendant concentration camps. He was an engineer enthralled by the possibility of space flight, sharing this dream with Von Braun and others, but his experience in the war showed him that Von Braun was not an innocent scientist and that the U.S. government was amoral in whitewashing Von Braun’s name.

The emotionally broken grandmother is a French jew who comes to the U.S. with a young daughter, Michael’s mother. Grandfather and grandmother meet at an affair at a local synagogue where the local yentas are trying to connect grandmother to the new rabbi, She is tormented by insane visions and is deeply loved by the grandfather. One day she breaks from reality once again, tormented by the image of a flayed horse. The grandfather is subsequently fired from his job and takes out his rage by choking his boss with the cord from a telephone. He is sentenced to 20 months in jail. While in jail he builds model rockets for the warden’s son. The launch of one of these rockets is witnessed by the Michael’s great-uncle who sees a market for these devices. Upon the grandfather’s release he becomes a partner in the company making the rockets for sale.

There is much sadness in this story as well as many secrets and lies. The grandfather is a brilliant and very private man with deep passions and a fascinating history. We never know the grandmother’s real or complete history. The mother is also complex and difficult. The father is more or less absent.

The narrative held my interest as it kept bouncing around in time, revealing a complex and beautiful story. The writing is spellbinding. It has both the ring of truth and the consistent flow of fine literature.

It Must have been Moonglow

I have said before, and I will say again, that: While any single work by Chabon may be compared (slightly) unfavorably next to a particular work by some other author, on the basis of his body of work, he is our best writer living today.

Be it an epic novel like "...Kavalier and Clay", or a stunning perfect miniature like "The Final Solution", he, simply has no equal.

Indeed, there is almost a minor disappointment with each new work in that we KNOW it's going to be great, the only surprise is how great and in what way.

This latest is great in Chabon's most basically Humanist vein; an epic/intimate work that will have you laughing and crying and nodding in agreement at its universal truths and staring in awe at its statements of facts-we-didn't-realize-were-so until now.

About the Author
Randy J. Larsen received his PhD in Personality Psychology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1984. In 1992 he was awarded the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award for Early Career Contributions to Personality Psychology from the American Psychological Association, and in 1987 he received a Research Scientist Development Award from the National Institute of Mental Health. He has been an associate editor at the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and has been on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Personality, Review of General Psychology, and the Journal of Personality. Randy Larsen has served on several Scientific Review Groups for the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Research Council. He is a Fellow in the Association for Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association. His research on personality has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Science Foundation for Cognitive Neuroscience, and the Solon Summerfield Foundation. In 2000 he was elected president of the Midwestern Psychological Association. He has served on the faculty at Purdue University and the University of Michigan. Currently Randy Larsen is chairman of the Psychology Department, and the William R. Stuckenberg Professor of Human Values and Moral Development, at Washington University in St. Louis, whe he teaches Personality Psychology and other courses. He lives in St. Louis with his wife and two children.



David M. Buss received his PhD in 1981 from the University of California at Berkeley. He served on the faculties of Harvard University and the University of Michigan before accepting a professorship at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught since 1996. Buss received the American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology in 1988, the APA G. Stanley Hall Award in 1990, and the APA Distinguished Scientist Lecturer Award in 2001. Books by David Buss include The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating (Revised Edition) (Basic Books, 2003), which has been translated into 10 languages; Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind (3rd ed.) (Allyn & Bacon, 2008), which was presented with the Robert W. Hamilton Book Award; The Dangerous Passion: Why Jealousy Is as Necessary as Love and Sex (Free Press, 2000), which has been translated into 13 languages; and The Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology (Wiley, 2005). Buss has authored more than 200 scientific publications and has also written articles for The New York Times and the Times Higher Education Supplement. He appears in the ISI List of Most Highly Cited Psychologists Worldwide, and as the 27th Most Cited Psychologist in Introductory Psychology textbooks. He lectures widely throughout the United States and abroad and has extensive cross-cultural research collaborations. David Buss greatly enjoys teaching, and in 2001 he won the President's Teaching Excellence Award at the University of Texas.

Great introduction to the field

This book provides a thorough introduction to the field of personality psychology as it currently exists. The focus is more on contemporary research as opposed to classic theories. I have used it in my personality psych class for the past 5 years and students like it a lot. It has a lot of information but is easy to read and understand.
